"It takes a special kind to lay claim to an entire world and call that Humility."
-Free Trader Demosis Rex

Humility is a hard-to-reach world in Winterscale's realm that long ago served as a Koronus-based home and launch-off point for the great missionary Nicomedes Keefe during his extensive work in the early years of Koronus Exploration and colonization. It has lost significant prominence since the great not-quite-saint’s death until it now holds onto existence as a simple distant backwater.

Astrography

Like many frontier systems, only the primary planet was given and registered with a name, in this case Humility. Officially the system still uses its arcane mechanicum designation, though in parlance it uses the planet's name instead. In addition to the moderate habitable planet of Humility itself, there are small handful of unremarkable asteroid fields and a gas giant in the system. None pose exceptional navigation hazards.

While nowhere in the Koronus expanse is what the great navigator houses would call "calm", the immediate area around Humility is fairly stable, but like a lot of locations around the Expanse, finds the Astronomicon more often obscured than visable.

Humility

Identifiable as dry but not to dry, fertile but not to fertile, with ore but without rich veins, Humility is almost the definition of usable but uninteresting to a Rogue Trader's eye. In millennia it may one day find it's purpose as a hive world, like many planets for whom habitability is their only viture, but for now it is the veritable definition of a frontier world.

Planetology

The planet of Humility consists of a single major continent split by a large mountain range which serves as a continental divide. Rivers great and small work their way down from these mountains and through their forested foothills to a pair of great plains which are little more then grassland dotted with ten thousand small lakes. On the smaller size, the rivers cut deep until they strike the ocean, while on the larger side much of the land grows so flat and saturated near the oceanfront that it is more of a mired swampland.

In addition to the great continent, many lesser and greater islands are scattered through the ocean and the poles are home to great glaciers of ice. A small commercial station sits in stationary orbit over the capital. Keefe's old vessel, the Valiant Heart can be seen having been all but permanently attached on one side, while the other remains open for visiting merchentmen.

The world has a fully developed floral biome, running the gambit from small grasses to forests of old, large trees, though the latter seem to congregate almost exclusively up in the colder slopes of the mountains and high foothills. The world's native animal life consists almost entirely smaller warm-blooded creatures, ranging from those a quarter the size of the humble Terran rat to apex carnivores reaching Canid size. Imported Grox, Equines and Canids, along with the typical invasive Terran rat complete world's major animal life.

Beastery

  • Small Marsupials (Native)
  • Rat (Invasive)
  • Grox (Imported)

Socialogy

Like many Imperial worlds, the population of Humility is highly centeralized. The City of Humility contains about 70% of the world's 80,000 residents, packed densly around factorums, governance structures and holy sites. About half of the remainder live in the city of Piety, a mining and lumber town housed in the foothills of the mountain. The remainder may be found in innumerable villages and towns scattered across the great plain, or managing the wondering herds. The islands and entire smaller half of the main continent remain officially unpopulated; though wanderers and asetics cannot be discounted.

Humility follows the aristocratic governance common across the Imperium, with the "Steward" (Formally "Missionary Lord Nicomedes Keefe's Planetary Steward") taking the roll of head-of-government. This is technically an appointed position, but as the power of appointment lays soely with the previous Steward, it has stayed largely in the same family since their founder's death. The advisory Senate is composed of those with the wealth and breading to take part, mostly found among Herd and Factory owners.

As befitting the nature of their honored founder, the citizens of Humility are a zealous bunch, with the church holding both large social and practical power over the planetary population.

Civil services are fairly light, as imperial centers go, with those that do exist largely under the control of the Church (typically ‘donated’ by aristocrats), including emergency response and security. True civil enforcement is still under the Steward’s office, in the form of a thin force of Sheriffs.

Locations of Interest

  • The Grand Compendium - A grand library located in the Palace of Governance. Nicomedes Keefe was a prolific writer, philosopher and almost obsessive chronicler, and the Grand Compendium is the sum total of his works, meticulously maintained by a staff of archivists and scribes. As most of the valuable information is located in the commentaries, finding what is needed can be as much a matter of luck as skill.
    • Spend 1 fate point to make any knowledge check as though you were trained or, if you are already trained, at +20%
  • Shrine of the Betrayed - An abby in the heart of the city, the Shrine surrounds and memorializes the location where “saint” Nicomedes was killed. It also houses his Stasis Mausoleum and a museum/reliquary including artifacts of this death.
  • Missionary Lord’s Apartment - The residence of Nicomedes Keefe when he lived, his prominence as a local saint saw most of this converted quickly into a museum, while the rest were reclaimed to fill the needs of the civil administration.
  • Piety’s Heart - A small commerce void station in fixed orbit above the City of Humility. One of the two full docks has been complealy consumed by the ‘’Valiant Heart’’, but the other remains in use by the occasional trader.

Resources

  • Grox The planet produces an abundance of Grox grown out on the fairly untouched plains of the world. These beasts, which would be considered high quality in the Calixus sector.
