S1-R1
Excerpt included from the Cybot Galactica model description: "S1-R ~ A universal database with Human Interfacing Protocols (HIP). The R models indicate its frame is reinforced for added protection in difficult or primitive environment. Standard features include a Holomessager for visual display of information, General Purpose Scanner for aid in classification and interpretation of data and questions, and a long ranged communication system for automatic updating and distant queries[Download the distant query app at cybotGalactic.org]. A perfect addition to any colony hoping to spread its knowledge to the stars."
While the S1 series was popular in its initial run, a critical defect in its ethics chip led to a voluntary recall a year after release. The first of three main issues with the ethics chip were that its bureaucratic analysis programing encouraged the droid's behavior of using the metaphorical letter of the ethical rules, to defeat the spirit of them. Secondarily it assumed that information not independently gathered by the droid was unreliable, and only to be used in ethical analysis under the droids "discretion", and use of its scanners is up to the droids "discretion". This led to the droid using secondary sources of information (like a targeting computer's information) only for practical uses and using its "discretion" to not use it during ethical analysis, and intentionally not confirm this information with its own scanners, leaving the ethics chip without enough information to compel behavior. Finally it was programmed to assume that sentient creatures should be treated ethically the same, which due to an oversight included droids on its lists of sentient creatures, leading to extreme beliefs about dismemberment, body modification, slavery, etc. A secondary defect, that the company insisted was a feature, would not be fixed till the S4 model, in this case the extreme levels of auto-updates. In the case of the S4 model they made these updates optional and gave the user the ability to pick and choose the information packages to be downloaded. This made the S4 the most popular of the S series model in the core and colonial systems, and the second most popular on the Rims, behind the S1 models.
