The U.S.S. Lovell is a new-off-the-line Luna-Class Cruiser and the home of our intrepid heroes. Under the command of Captain Dhomhnaill, it monitors and moves between the edges of Federation Space and Deep Space.

Luna-Class Cruiser

The Luna-class cruisers are the smallest of the mainline federation ships, hardly larger than than the old NX-class ships that humanity sent into the void before the creation of the Federation. Despite their size, the Luna-class cruisers are fully equipped Starfleet vessels, including tactical and scientific payloads, though not to the same extent or redundancy found on the larger, more facility-minded vessels and often having to forgo highly specialized equipment. As the fastest vessels available to Starfleet, Luna-class cruisers are often used as reaction vessels or in other situations where time is of critical importance. On the other hand, the ship's more limited stores and temperamental engines mean they are typically kept closer to starbases and federation supply lines.

The most distinctive feature of the Luna-class is the unique tri-nacelle design. The Federation discovered very early in the development of warp travel that the most stable generation matrix was to use two nacelles. However, numerous experiments into other warp field configurations continued well into the 23rd century. These experiments eventually produced two unique alternate patters - the single nacelle design and the triple nacelle design. The single nacelle version proved to create a highly efficient, if slightly slower and less stable warp system. This system would be used on a handful of long-run, deep space ship designs. The tri-nacelle version, on the other hand, takes a large number of resources and, if all are operating, creates a very unstable warp system. However, when properly carefully aligned, the ship is both much faster and more nimble while at warp speeds. When cruising, the crews of Luna-class cruisers typically run with just the single "inboard" or two "outboard" engines online, although the depowered coils still reduce the efficiency and stability of the resulting field.
