Nichol was abandoned at a monastery in Gloss as a baby, an uncommon but not unheard of practice. In accordance with tradition, he was raised by the monks and instructed on living a holy life. In most respects, Nichol adapted well to the rigors and requirements of monastic tradition. He learned is Latin at a young age, as well as the ability to read and write. Later, it was discovered he had particular artistic talent with the decorating of Illuminations. As with many of the more academically inclined monks, Nichol was taught how to copy texts, a common and critical task in many monasteries.
It was in this capacity that Nichol began running into trouble with the abbot. He discovered a love of reading the books he was supposed to be copying. Perhaps more dangerously, he started to read beyond the books he was copying to those he was not supposed to look into, particularly non-cannon theology and pagan philosophe.
At the age of sixteen Nichol was offered the choice all those raised by the monastery are given, take orders and join the monastery proper, or head out into the world to make your own way. This choice vexed Nichol for some time as he was torn between a desire to expand his learning beyond the proscribed scriptures, but not knowing where he could be assured of such opportunity outside of a monetary.
Much to his fortune, during this time the leonus expedition took shelter at his monastery during their travels. Striking up a conversation with the (to be) steward Robert, he learned about the expedition and explained his predicament. Robert, in turn, guessed at the impending need of a scribe for the covenant (they were carrying a lot of books after all) and brought up the idea of taking Nichol along with them to the Magi. After a brief interview it was decided they would employee him, and a few days later Nichol left the monastery with the expedition for the Scilly Islands.
