New Species
Shirren (Killik Offshoot)
In Pact Space, killiks, known there as Shirren, seem to operate on a more individual basis, not unlike most species. Although they have strong communal tendencies with their own kind, they don't exhibit the same kind of nesting and breeding behaviors seen in the known galaxy.
A significant reproductive difference that evolved was the emergency of a third sex, or host. The distribution between sexes is more balanced as a result. with male and female members contributing sperm and egg, respectively, while the host incubates the fertilized egg and contributes their own genetic material. This is stark contrast to the standard killik reproduction of majority female who lay thousands of eggs with comparatively few male members whose only evolutionary and societal task is to fertilize eggs.
Bestiary
The Unknown Regions has creatures unseen and unknown to other parts of the galaxy.
Technology
Exotic Tech
Ships in the Unknown Region are built by entirely different shipyards and have different aesthetics from the known galaxy. And while it would might be possible to identify a given ship based on general characteristics ('that looks like a warship', 'that looks like a bulk freighter') it will take a while for PCs from the known galaxy to easily identify ships by sight or sensor profile.
Similarly, while there exists a great deal of technology whose uses will be identical or similar to that found in the known galaxy, there are unique styles or uses for technology that also don't exist in the known galaxy. Identifying these will also be difficult without spending a great deal of time in the region.
Because of this unfamiliarity, all skill checks to know anything about or to use this technology should include some sort of penalty, either one or more upgrades to the difficulty , and/or one or more for PCs. This can be mitigated by acquiring one or more pips in the new skill, Knowledge: The Unknown Regions (see House Rules).
