Zach's Letter

Episode 2: "His Lesser Half"

In this episode, we were introduced to Ciaran Brennan, a former FBI agent and John Clark's current handler, assigned it seems to keep an eye on his activities. Ciaran's an Irishman by birth but raised in America - but you wouldn't know that from his charming accent.

A strange message came for the crew via a string of hunters, ending in Chuck. The message was from a fixer, Zach Schram, a hunter too weak to go out into the field himself. Schram asked the hunters to meet him at the Idylease Inn in New Jersey to ask them for help. According to Zach, he was being stalked by a man from the mob... a man who had been buying supernatural items from other hunters. The meeting didn't go so well though, as the mob called a hit out on Zach's associates- our favorite hunters.

After a fight that left three burly men dead and two unconscious, the hunters followed Zach to his house for the skinny on Idylease, the mob and his stalker. Idylease Inn is a historical resort used as neutral ground by the wealthy, political, criminal, and occasionally supernatural. Zach had never heard of his stalker, Larry Boher, until the man bought a book from him by using another hunter as the intermediary. The other hunter was paid to keep his mouth shut about the deal but talked and wound up dead for it. Boher himself is a hit man that beats up his targets, but he looks so scrawny and his victims look like they were hit by mack trucks; the man was never convicted. The creepy part: Boher's been checking up on Zach for years and freaking out other hunters.

The Hunters and Zach went to investigate Boher's home, a veritable shrine to his ego. The Hunters perused his house and discovered a library of supernatural tomes in the basement, all of which were bunk. The hunters peeled themselves away from watching a James Bond marathon on Boher's big screen but had tripped his supernatural alarm system: large dogs formed out of the materials in the house, attacking the crew as soon as they went back upstairs. The hunters holed up in the basement and used a variety of methods (including shooting a bag of salt) to keep the dogs at bay. The hounds were destroyed and Amanda pointed her companions to a hidey-hole in one of the busted walls - a secret compartment for Boher's true activities.

In the stash, the hunters discovered the bloody rituals Boher performed, sacrificing people to steal their good parts and make himself stronger. After some convincing, Dr. Airy let his curiosity win and hacked Boher's hidden hard drive. Turns out Boher's not just been stalking Zach recently, but for nine years, longer than he's been a hunter. The hunters also found records of the hits he had done and enough personalized information to incriminate over fifty other people in over ninety murders, which Ciaran planned to forward on to the authorities. They also found an address for a hit on a witness Boher was planning on executing the next day.

That info took the hunters to a new housing development with only one - that of the witness- lived in. The witness' house had a razed yard, indicating they knew Boher was coming. The hunters planned out an attack, lying in wait for Boher along the road with a truck (stolen off the Princeton University grounds) filled with fuel and rigged with a radio controlled IED. Instead of Boher, however, Zach showed up, to frightened to remain on his own anymore. Soon after, Airy saw some movement which turned out to be deer, but Ciaran was clued in that someone was already in the witness' house. The crew rushed to the house and Scott put the pedal to the metal on the truck, swinging it behind the house.

The hunters caught a call from Boher to Zach's phone, and Marcus wisecracked his way through Boher's "evil villain monologue." The one thing that came from it was this: all the bad parts from the sacrificed victims Boher killed didn't just disappear- they went into a poor stillborn kid named Zach - explaining why Boher was stalking him for years. Boher offered the witness his life in return for killing Boher instead. Marcus rushed into the house to tangle with Boher and the witness, a very large man with a shotgun named Antony Scapanelli. Scott crashed the truck into the house (so much brotherly love there) and John, Amanda, Airy, and Ciaran ran to give aid. Scapanelli was led out of the house. Instead of killing him, and surprising the hunters, took two molotov cocktails from Zach and rushed back into the house.

Scott and Marcus were both battered from tussling with the strangely powerful Boher, but subdued him to the ground. Scapanelli threw down the bottles on Boher, wanting to do something good with his life and go out in the fire, revealing to Amanda that he had been a hit man too before he ratted on Boher's own crime. Amanda tried to persuade him to leave and save himself as the fire caught higher and the other hunters made for the door. Eventually a gentle hand was all that was needed to guide the big man out. The hunters ran and made a dramatic leap as the truck exploded and the house- with Boher in it- fireballed.

Dr. Airy made good use of Zach's home clinic to patch the hunters (especially the Remingtons) up and Scapanelli decided to stay with the shaken Zach and work with him as a hunter. All the dirt they gathered was forwarded to the FBI and the crew got a call from Chuck, inviting them (when they recover in a couple weeks) to a weekend party with some fellow hunters and friends...
