Been doing some research for Brad Jenner. Thank God Linda has a ton of weird useful books from college. Add the internet and it’s not too bad. Hopefully this will help him with the kid he’s got locked up in the basement.

In ancient Greek thought, an eidolon (εἴδωλον "image, idol, double, apparition, phantom, ghost") is a spirit-image of a living or dead person; a shade or phantom look-alike of the human form.

According to some ancient Greeks, Helen of Troy never bodily went to Troy at all, but only her eidolon, which was made by Hermes.

The eidolon lines up with notions of the perispirit or kama-rupa after death in theosophy. The perispirit is what mediums say they interact with- that’s where channelling occurs. But the kama-rupa retains these animal or subconscious tendencies that can take over a person. It’s not your soul, not your body, seems messed up to me.

So in this way (which really makes my brain hurt) the eidolon behaves like a demon and could possess a medium or hapless individual, driven by base needs and desires. But it can’t be compelled like one. The new slashes on my arms are proof of that. Instead of dissipating after death, the kama-rupa/eidolon could be called back and become a truly god-awful vampire-like thing. Going to call around for some possibilities on how to get rid of this one. November 22, 2000

Well, damn. Poor kid. Who knew getting rid of an eidolon was so hard? It’s NOT a demon. It can’t be fully exorcised. Whatever it really is, it’s something older, and powerful, like a pagan god. The kid started talking smack to Brad too, just like a demon or god. It knows things in the same way so it can get under your skin. Well, at least this one did. They all seem to want something different. I talked to a professor of Ancient studies at Fairbanks on the phone. His opinion was that eidolons were all created differently, and they latch on to people who are similar in some way or have the same drives as the eidolon. It’s like how a spirit becomes a deity when it’s worshipped... or maybe what happens to a god that dies. I don’t know which. Just how I understand it. Anyways, how to get rid of it.

You can’t.

Well, you can, but it kills the person it’s claiming as a vessel.

How am I supposed to break it to Brad that he’s got to kill his son?
