Background

With few family members and no means to support herself, Jasmine was enticed in a career in the military to pay for post-secondary education. She was at the younger end of cadets at the Air Force Academy, starting as a freshman at the age of 17. Despite her relative youth, she was blessed with a natural intellect, a trait which her instructors at the Academy recognized and nurtured.

Though she graduated with high honours, by the time her four years were done, she realized that becoming a pilot was not quite her passion; she was good at the sciences, however, and was selected as one of the few graduates to be sent to medical school via the Air Force’s Health Professions Scholarship Program. Four more years of school was followed by three years of active duty service, where she served in both domestic and forward bases with distinction.

With the nation embroiled in two wars in the Middle East, there was no shortage of work to be found for a doctor with a specialization in emergency medicine. Jasmine was then moved from stateside to Germany, then closer to the fronts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Here, she honed her skills patching up the many injured and maimed military personnel fighting insurgents. From time to time, she found herself flying to forward operating bases (FOB) to provide immediate care to stabilize critically injured service members. Her coolness under fire while dealing with some of the worst trauma patients to enter into medical care earned her commendations. These would eventually got her noticed by the SGC, who were looking to build out their stable of officers as they expanded the program from just Milky Way operations to Pegasus Galaxy operations with Atlantis.

Finch spent a couple of years in safer assignments largely around Ramstein Air Base, but was occasionally loaned out for humanitarian missions and disaster relief whenever the US military was called to do so. Examples included the Indonesia in 2009 for tsunami relief, Haiti and Pakistan for earthquake and flooding relief operations.

She was offered the opportunity to join SGC while serving in Germany, after which she transferred to Cheyenne Mountain. Her introduction to the Stargate program was as a medical doctor on base while she was introduced to the wider aspect of the galactic struggle against the Goa'uld, the Replicators, and the many threats to human existence. In time, she was tapped to serve on the Atlantis Expedition after its return to the Pegasus galaxy, joining one of the Atlantis Reconnaissance Teams exploring gates in that galaxy.
