SEGMENT: Berkenstein Shootout

EMILY WONG, CITADELNET NEWS ANCHOR, HUMAN: Moving on to Berkenstein. A shootout in the downtown core of Berkenstein City has shocked residents earlier today.

CNN Correspondent Abby Bailey in Berkenstein City has the story.

(BEGIN HOLOTAPE)

ABBY BAILEY, CITADELNET NEWS CORRESPONDENT, HUMAN: It was a scene of mass pandemonium today in the financial district. At around 5:00 pm Berkenstein Colonial Time, in the heart of rush hour, a shootout took place in an apparently gang-related altercation took. Officials describe the attack on as a brazen act and vow to catch those involved.

(PREVIOUS RECORDING)

TORAN HOBBS, COLONIAL SECURITY SPOKESMAN, HUMAN: We have detained a man who appears to have run over and into three turians that were involved in the shootout. Two turians are dead on the scene, and the third is in critical condition under guard at a local hospital. We are following all leads at this time. We suspect that this was a gang-related shooting, though the motives of the other parties involved are not known at this time.

ABBY BAILEY: Witnesses describe the scene as chaos as they ran for their lives from the shootout.

(BEGIN RECORDING)

JUNE CLEAVER, HUMAN: It was crazy! We were at a light that nobody was moving at for some reason. We sat through eight or nine different light changes when suddenly shots rang out! They were three or four cars ahead of me when I saw bullets flying all over the place! We all got out of the car and ran away from the scene.

FOR-AL CLAN WEYAN, VOLUS: There were Earth Clan running everywhere! I saw the driver of one of the vehicles involved shoot in the air before it all started. I think it was a krogan. Everybody knows krogan are crazy. What are they even doing on an Earth Clan colony? They told us this was the safest Earth Clan colony around, especially this close to the Citadel. I’m not so sure any more.

YURIEL FEREL, ASARI: I saw at least 15, maybe 20 guys all shooting it out. Some were behind cover, some on the sidewalk, and explosions! Then that crazy guy drove his car backwards and ran over some of those on the sidewalk. And then sat there! Some guys in a black car with illegal anti-grav modifications got in – shooting the whole time – and drove over the traffic lane. I think three or four cars got hit while they shot back. I think a bunch of them got hit because they left a couple of their guys behind. They all had hats and sunglasses, so I couldn’t see their faces.

ABBY BAILEY: As you can see, the scene described by witnesses demonstrate a well-coordinated assault with external players involved. While crime is a factor on all colonies, an attack of this openness has shaken residents’ faith that the security forces are doing all that they can to keep Earth’s most successful and richest colony safe from the intergalactic criminal syndicates that operate in and near the Citadel. Officials are interviewing everyone and demanding any potential holovid surveillance from local businesses to help piece together the attack. If anyone has any information regarding the gang members involved, please notify colonial officials. They are described as armed and very dangerous.
