Back to Navigator Mordecai

1st Lt. Cutter Dunbar, Bridge Officer and Pilot

Before joining the staff as at attendant to the Navigator retinue on board the Aurea Albion, Cutter Dunbar was a First Lieutenant in the Imperial Navy of Armageddon Sector. Born Casie Carilli, she was orphaned at age 10 after her parents, both naval officers themselves, perished during one of the many battles defending the sector. She was placed into the Schola Progenium with numerous other orphans from that battle and began her life as an acolyte.

As part of her remolding and training, she was given the name of an Imperial hero, an Imperial Navy captain with a distinguished record in the Sector. As part of her studies, she was allowed to research her new namesake, discovering that while he served with honor and made a name for himself, he was also known in some circles as a maverick. She wondered how strict obedience to the tenets of Imperial society and his exploits could be resolved. She began to adopt some of her namesake's approaches which made her both admirers and enemies within the Schola Progenium.

Noted by her instructors to be proficient in mathematics, she was steered into the career of both her parents and her hero - that of serving as an officer in the Imperial Navy. With so many orphans, she was forced to work hard for the very best scores and many hours in the training simulators to master aspects of flying in both atmosphere and in the void. Her hard work paid off and she was admitted as a midshipman in the Imperial Navy to begin her life as an officer.

Life on board an Imperial Navy vessel brought a second shock in her life. The first was the loss of her parents at a young age and being sent to the harsh disciplinary life at the Schola Progenium. The second was dealing with her fellow midshipmen who came from the privileged elite. She clashed frequently with those who lacked what she considered the appropriate discipline and respect for the position, something many nobles' children were still having beat out of them. She developed a reputation for out-competing fellow midshipmen of noble descent to put them in their place, finding creative solutions to her orders. She always completed her orders, but the manner in their completion often rubbed some people the wrong way. Still, the results of her work could not be questioned and she began to ascend the ranks.

In time, she was transferred to a frigate where her career progression came to a sudden halt. While her last commander was more forgiving her her unorthodox approaches and perhaps even appreciated her individuality, her new captain was much more by-the-book. She racked up writeups for trivial infractions at an impressive rate as she struggled against the process-over-results culture. A particularly acrimonious argument over her last mission performance during shore leave led to her arrest as the captain had enough of her perceived insubordination. She was court martialled, but found not guilty of dereliction of duty (as she had fulfilled her orders), but her captain had her transferred off the ship anyway.

Due to the abrupt change, the Navy administration had her languishing at a desk with no real duties when a truly ancient Rogue Trader vessel came in with heavy battle damage. During the months spent at port getting refitted and re-crewed, a friendly contact in the Naval bureaucracy whispered that a Navigator had made inquiries about officer commissions that could be purchased. The contact put Cutter in touch with Anastasia Ben'yam. At first, Cutter couldn't believe that she was a Navigator as she looked too human and her third eye had been covered with a headwrap.

A few interviews later, Cutter found herself agreeing to serving aboard a Rogue Trader vessel where she was assured that her experience in the Navy would be appreciated, and where 'unorthodox' was not only permitted but even expected. The Rogue Trader in question may not have come from a Navy background, but trusted his officers to get work done. A recounting of some of the exploits sold the deal for her. Cutter's commission was purchased over by the Ben'yam Navigator house so that technically she was working for them, rather than House Drake. This distinction was of little difference to her, as she was now free once again sail the void

Duties

Cutter's day-to-day duties are as a bridge officer with her duties decided by the XO "Jimmy". The spacious, even luxurious, bridge took some getting used to as the positions for stations were designed in a different age. While she found there was a certain level of discipline expected, the hierarchy of a Rogue Trader vessel was definitely not following Imperial Navy lines. There was a certain level of flexibility and autonomy to 'get the job done' that she likes, despite the rather feudal approach to running the ship.

While docked or in orbit, Cutter's duties occasionally turn to commanding a craft carrying members of the Navigator's retinue, or occasionally the Rogue Trader's retinue, as she has received extensive voidcraft and planetary craft pilot training.
