The Svard 1st Expeditionary is an infantry based combined-arms regiment raised from Svard's planetary defense force and equipped by way of Drake's personal fortune. They are house, based, and train on the Aurea Albion, where they can provide instant ground forces or aid in shipborne assaults. They are commanded by the Svard native General Geirr Hrœrekr, a veteran of the Whisperer conflict who has been with the regiment since it's creation.

History

Inspect the Troops.jpg

While the Svard 1st Expeditionary traces their history to the first group of volunteer soldiers who joined Lord Captain Drake in his search for the Dread Pearl, the unit did not exist in any organized capacity until the raised for the Siege of Damaris. Fearing the worst in the days before the ork invasion, the leadership of Svard called together all of its combat veterans and assembled a small regiment's strength of soldiers to be sent off-world to try and end the threat, less the orks break through and head for their home world of Svard next.

While they were initially neither well-trained nor well-equipped, the Svard 1st did have the distinction of having survived a decade of the Whisperer's attacks, ensuring that only the strongest, most dedicated minds continue to serve. Since becoming the go-to regiment for ground actions for Lord Drake, they've had their equipment and training upgraded, transforming them into a scouting and ranger infantry regiment with significant firepower capabilities. Being continuously stationed on the Aurea Albion, they have either taken part in or witness a large number of the operations the Explorers have been part of, most notably the Purification of Aurum from the Genesteelers and capture of the heretics of Theta-37-Gamma.

After the recent visit to Armageddon, the Svard 1st Expidationary was able to add on a 3rd division consisting of mechanized infantry and armor units equipped with a large collection of vehicles Drake had acquired from the industrial center. The soldiers for this new division were raised from among the outlying hunting-homes of the Svard Levy, whose experience with transversing the wide-open tundra was considered particularly valuable and applicable.

Doctrine and Capabilities

While the Svard 1st Expeditionary had grown from a few companies of volunteer riflemen to an Imperial Regiment sized combined arms force, the general combat doctrine has remained based on a level of operational flexibility and ground-level determination that would infuriate most commissars. The level of independence, however, suis the strong-willed and vigilant Svardsmen well and does not rub as strongly against the grain in a Rogue Trader's command. The Svard's doctrines are further informed by their long battle against the Whisperer into a preference to overwatch and skirmish actions over heavy assaults and a demand for extensive and accurate intelligence.

The core of the 1st Expeditionary consists of a thousand troopers equipped with light, multifunctional weaponry and camouflage equipment. This equipment, combined with their training and skill, makes them highly effective at harassment and reconnaissance work, particularly in medium-density terrain where they can find ample room to hide without losing the range advantage gained from their marksmen-quality rifles.

The heavy division of the 1st Expeditionary contains over fifty armored vehicles of various types. The ten heaviest ones, which include the crusade-pattern vehicles recovered from the Light of Terra, are organized into the Crusade Spearhead Company, and are used as a sledgehammer in field operations. The rest are formed into combined-arms groups of mechanized infantry with light tank and artillery support, all based around the Armaggedon Chimera chassis. The recruited Svardsmen are adapting well to the increased mobility offered by the multi-functional vehicles, but given how new the division is, there are still several operational kinks to work out.

Known Actions

  • Invasion of the Colossus (Pre-Formation)
  • The Conquest of the Dread Pearl (Pre-Formation)
  • The Siege of Damaris
  • Reconciliation of Aurum: Battle of Grensvayl
  • The Battle of the Burning Plain
  • The Occupation of Corda's Landing
  • The Evacuation of Verdansk

Strategic Units

While there are official and adhered command structures in place, the Svard can be very flexible in actual deployment, often separating and maneuvering companies by theater rather than exact instruction. The deployment and command of vehicular support is particularly flexible, even by Imperial standards, with sentinels being assigned directly to the command of squad leaders.

Command Breakdown

The Svard 1st Expeditionary is broken down into the following individual commands:

  • 1st Light Infantry Battalion (Power 5, Strength 50, Skills 30, Morale 70)

Chimera

Imperial Guard Chimera Armored Personnel Carrier

The Drake Dynasty has owned a couple of Chimeras for several years which were crewed by a handful of veteran Svard 1st Expeditionary who were not considered part of the "normal" order of battle. However, during the Aurea Albion's recent trip and refit at Armageddon, the regiment gained both a score of new, dedicated, high-grade Chimeras and enough true barracks space to house and equip them. These Chimeras are used as part of the 3rd Division.

Trojan

Trojan Support Tank with crane extended

The Drake Dynasty has owned a couple of Trojan Support Tanks for several years which were crewed by a handful of veteran Svard 1st Expeditionary who were not considered part of the "normal" order of battle. These have been rolled into the 3rd Division after Armaggedon and supplemented with another half-dozen. They primarily act in support of the artillery units but are occasionally called on to be recovery vehicles.

Barghest

Barghest Light Tank with Searchlight

A rare, longer-ranged variant of the Hellhound light tank, the Barghest replaces the inferno turret with a heavier duty autocannon turret equipped with the same heavy gauge autocannon & coaxial stubber used on the Predator tanks of the Astartes. The Svard 1st Expeditionary has eight of these light tanks split among the four combined arms companies.

Griffon

Griffin Mortar

The Griffon Assault Artillery is a somewhat niche chimera-based vehicle that is falling out of favor because, despite its millennia of service, it does not fit well into standard Tactica Imperialis doctrine. In the mixed units of the Svard 3rd division, however, it is appreciated for its ability to provide accurate, close-in artillery support without reducing the mobility of the rest of the mechanized unit. The 3rd Division currently has eight of these vehicles split among the four Mobile Companies.

Leman Russ Battle Tank

Leman Russ Main Battle Tank

The main battle tanks of the Imperial Guard and the mainstay of armored regiments across the Imperium, the Leman Russ are produced in the millions on Forge Worlds and in Hive factories across the Imperium. While slow in comparison to other Guard vehicles and lacking in advanced technology, its ruggedness and reliability are the tank's defining attributes. The Light of Terra's crusade-pattern Leman Russ tanks are masterworks of the manufactorum's art, with smooth autoloaders, miniaturized instrumentation, and a full NBCV seal allowing the crew to reasonably live in their vehicle for days on end if the mission calls for it.

The Main Battle Tank variant of the Leman Russ is armed with a turret-mounted Battle Cannon, a 120mm smoothbore gun who’s APHE shells are equally decimating enemy infantry and tanks. Aiming the weapon is done through a dedicated periscope with a 45° field of vision. The tank also mounts a Lascannon in the forward hull mount with a 90° field of fire. The Exterminator variant of the Leman Russ is armed with a turret-mounted twin-autocannon and faster tracking rate which allows it to better target fast-moving light vehicles. The tank also mounts both a front and sponson heavy bolters thanks to it's much smaller ammunition space requirement. The Demolisher variant of the Leman Russ is armed with the massive Demolisher cannon, one of the most devastating direct-fire weapons found on anything smaller than a superheavy. It also sports a front-mounted heavy bolter.

The Svard 1st Expeditionary's Crusade Spearhead currently consists of 4 Leman Russ Main Battle Tanks, 2 Leman Russ Exterminator Tanks, and 2 Leman Russ Demolisher Tanks. Approximately half of these were recovered from the Light of Terra, while the remainder were purchased in kind from Armageddon.

Bombard

Imperial Guard Bombard with Heavy Siege Mortar

The Bombard variant of the Leman Russ is a radical departure from the standard tank, preserving little more than the drivetrain. Nearly every other ounce of weight has been stripped from the tank to allow for the mounting of a heavy Bombard cannon. The Bombard cannon is the largest mobile artillery cannon in the Imperial armory, and the largest weapon in the Drake arsenal not mounted on a voidship. The standard ammunition, which House Drake is currently stocking, creates a blast, not unlike that from a demolisher cannon, but slightly larger and with much greater range. The nature of the bombard, including shells too heavy to be lifted by people, prevents any onboard munitions storage. Although it can tug its own trailer, the Bombard will normally be followed by a dedicated Trojan carrying and handing off the necessary ammunition. Like all of the Crusade-pattern tanks, the Leman Russ Bombard is fully NBCV sealed, adding dedicated inside space for the tank commander, who would otherwise ride outside on the platform.

The Svard 1st Expeditionary's Crusade Spearhead currently consists of two Bombards, one recovered from the Light of Terra and it's twin purchased at Armageddon. Their slow speed and long set up time mean that they rarely maneuver with the Spearhead once combat is joined, but instead tend to be set to lob shells over their fellow tank's heads.

Brace The Bombard requires that the vehicle be braced and the weapon unlocked for use prior to firing. This takes 4 full rounds and the vehicle must be stopped the entire time.
Bombard The Bombard Mortar is on a fixed mount. It is operated by the Commander.

Mark's Suggested Regimental Build (From Only War)

NOTE: Updated 8/11/13 to reflect latest gear

The rules listed for the Svard 1st Expeditionary have been created using the following Regiment Creation doctrines:

  • Home World: Death World (variant), 3 points; Hardened replaced with Resistance (Psychic Powers)
  • Commanding Officer: Bilious, 2 points
  • Regiment Type: Reconnaissance, 3 points
  • Doctrines: Cameleoline, 3 points
  • Total Cost: 11 points

(See the Discussion page for the raw build)

Characters belonging to the Svard 1st Expeditionary gain the following advantages:

  • Characteristic Modifiers: +6 Perception, +3 Toughness, -3 Fellowship
  • Starting Aptitudes: Willpower
  • Starting Skills: Survival, Awareness
  • Starting Talents: Resistance (Psychic Powers), Paranoia, Combat Sense
  • Survivor of the Whisperer: After decades of surviving the Whisperer's attacks and subversion on Svard, the Regiment has developed techniques and rewarded those with strong mental fortitude. Regimental soldiers are among the most hardened men and women in the Imperium who can withstand the insidious psychic assaults of filthy xenos. Characters gain the Resistance (Psychic Attacks) talent.
  • Wary of Outsiders: Svardians tend to be slow to put their faith in anyone other than themselves and their comrades, and they chafe at the expectations and strictures of outside society. This paranoia is a result of the Whisperer who, for many years, put Svardian against Svardian. They suffer a -10 penalty on all interaction skill tests made in formal surroundings, and a -10 interaction skill tests made with any non-death worlders. These penalties can be waived at the GM's discretion if the death worlders are dealing with those who have earned their trust
  • Wounds: Regimental soldiers start with +2 Wounds
  • Standard Regimental Kit: Uniform, set of poor weather gear, knife, flak vest, rucksack or sling bag, set of basic tools, mess kit, water canteen, blanket, sleep bag, rechargeable lamp pack, grooming kit, set of cognomen tags, primer, combat sustenance rations (2 weeks' supply), Triplex-pattern lasgun with 2 spare charge packs (Main Weapon), Guard Flak Trenchcoat, 2 frag grenades, 2 krak grenades, one Sentinel Scout Walker per squad, one set of magnoculars per player character, one chrono
  • Favoured Weapons: Triplex-pattern lasgun, Missile launcher
